FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.  Starting a business seems so complicated. I hardly know where to begin. Can you help?
Visit the state of Maryland's website at www.state.md.us and type "checklist for new businesses" in the searchbox. You'll find links for state and local requirements. Then visit www.irs.gov and type "starting a business" in the searchbox. While you are on the IRS website, order Publication 3207, The Small Business Resource Guide, which has been prepared by the IRS and the Small Business Administration. It's on a CD, which is convenient. (If you have any trouble getting it to start, view the directory. Try start.exe. If that doesn't work, open Index.htm.)
2.   How do I find out about taxes?
The sources identified in 1. above include information about taxes. In addition, you can visit www.state.md.us, click on Business and then visit Data Center. You can find a  lot more tax information available at the state's and the IRS' sites.
3.   Are there any Grants available?
That depends on what you mean. We're not aware of any grants to enable a person or persons to start a for-profit business where you get the profits if it's successful and someone else takes the loss if it isn't. However, the Federal Government provides help through SBA guaranteed loans and the state of Maryland provides  assistance to small businesses too. When you visit www.state.md.us, click on Business and then Business Assistance to get more information.
Grants  may be available for specific purposes. To learn more, visit www.state.md.us and type "grants" in the searchbox. In addition to information about specific grants, you'll find a link to the Grant Resource Center which leads you to searchable databases.
4.   How do I start a non-profit in Maryland?
Visit the state of Maryland's website at www.state.md.us and type "start a non-profit" in the searchbox.  You'll find the information you need.
